How to choose a mattress in India
Buying a mattress online can feel like a gamble — dozens of names, confusing firmness scales, and prices all over the place. It doesn't need to be. The right mattress comes down to four simple decisions: the size, the firmness, the foam type, and the height. Get those right and the rest is noise.
1. Pick the right size
Start by measuring your bed frame, then match it to a standard Indian mattress size. These are the most common dimensions in India — always confirm against your frame, as sizes vary slightly by maker:
| Size | Typical dimensions (inches) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 36 × 72 | One person, kids, guest rooms |
| Double | 48 × 72 | Couples on a budget, smaller rooms |
| Queen | 60 × 78 | Most couples — the popular choice |
| King | 72 × 78 | Couples wanting maximum space |
If you're between sizes, go up — extra sleeping space almost always pays off. See the sizes available on each mattress when you choose.
2. Choose firmness by how you sleep
Firmness is the single biggest factor in comfort, and it depends mostly on your sleeping position and body weight:
- Back sleepers — medium-firm. It keeps the spine aligned without pressure on the lower back.
- Side sleepers — medium. The shoulder and hip need to sink in just enough to stay aligned.
- Stomach sleepers — firm. A softer bed lets the hips dip and strains the back.
- Back pain — an orthopaedic / firmer feel gives the support most people with back issues need.
- Heavier body weight — go a step firmer; denser foam holds support for longer.
3. Understand the foam
Most quality foam mattresses in India use one or more of these layers:
High-resilience (HR) foam
A denser, more durable, more breathable foam than ordinary PU foam. It bounces back quickly and holds its support for years — the workhorse of a good mattress.
Memory foam
Moulds to your body and relieves pressure points, which is why it's popular for joint and back comfort. It sleeps a little warmer and has a slower "sinking" feel.
Orthopaedic & dual comfort
"Orthopaedic" simply means a firmer, more supportive build aimed at back support. "Dual comfort" gives you two firmness levels — one on each face of the mattress.
Look for BIS-compliant foam — it tells you the material meets Indian quality standards. Every Beditation mattress uses BIS-compliant HR foam made in our own Jodhpur factory.
4. Don't overthink height
Mattress height (usually 5–8 inches for foam) mostly affects feel and how it looks on your frame. A taller mattress generally feels a touch more cushioned. Pick based on comfort, not the number.
What you can safely ignore
- Inflated "MRP" discounts. A ₹30,000 mattress marked down to ₹9,000 was never worth ₹30,000. Judge the actual price and the foam.
- Buzzwords without substance. "Cloud", "cooling gel", "AI foam" — ask what the foam density and type actually are.
- Showroom mark-ups. Buying factory-direct online cuts out the middleman, which is how online brands offer better foam for less.
