HR foam vs memory foam

Two very different foams — how they feel, how they wear, and who each suits.

Most foam mattresses in India are built from some combination of HR foam and memory foam, so understanding HR foam vs memory foam is the quickest way to make sense of any product listing. They behave almost opposite to each other: one pushes back, the other gives way. Neither is better in general — they suit different people.

What HR foam is

HR stands for high-resilience. It is a polyurethane foam with a more open, irregular cell structure than ordinary PU foam. In practice that means:

HR foam is typically used as the supportive core of a mattress, and sometimes on its own for firmer, orthopaedic-style builds.

What memory foam is

Memory foam (viscoelastic foam) softens with body heat and pressure. It sinks slowly under you, moulds around your shape and takes a few seconds to recover when you get up. It is mostly used as a comfort layer on top of a firmer core, because on its own it offers limited push-back.

Which sleeps cooler in India?

HR foam, clearly. Its open structure and firmer surface mean less of your body is wrapped in foam, so heat escapes more easily. Memory foam responds to warmth by softening and surrounding you, which traps heat. In a hot room without AC, that difference is noticeable. Cotton sheets and a slatted base help either one.

Which lasts longer?

It depends on density more than type. Good HR foam is known for keeping its support over many years. Good-density memory foam also lasts well, but low-density memory foam can develop body impressions early. Since memory foam usually sits on top of a core, the durability of the whole mattress often comes down to the quality of that core — and HR foam makes a strong one. Which is better for…

Back pain

For most people, a medium-firm HR foam build gives the steady support that keeps the spine level. Some people with back pain also like a thin memory foam layer on top for comfort. More in best mattress for back pain.

Side sleepers and joint pain

Memory foam, or a softer layered mattress. Shoulders and hips need pressure relief that firm HR foam alone doesn't give.

Stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers

HR foam. It stops the hips sinking and holds up under more weight.

Couples

Memory foam absorbs a partner's movement best; HR foam makes it easier for either person to move around. A layered mattress is often the compromise.

Combination sleepers

HR foam, or a medium layered build. Memory foam's slow response makes frequent position changes more effort.

You don't always have to choose

Many mattresses combine both: an HR foam core for support and a memory foam or soft foam layer for comfort. That hybrid approach suits a lot of sleepers who want some contouring without sinking.

How our range uses each

Frequently asked questions

Is HR foam better than memory foam?

Neither is better overall. HR foam is more supportive, cooler and bouncier; memory foam relieves pressure better and isolates motion. Choose based on your sleeping position and whether you sleep hot.

Is HR foam good for back pain?

A medium-firm HR foam mattress is a strong choice for many people with back pain, because it keeps the spine supported and resists sagging.

Does HR foam sleep hot?

Less than memory foam. Its open-cell structure and firmer surface let heat escape more easily.

What is BIS-compliant HR foam?

HR foam that meets the relevant Bureau of Indian Standards requirements for foam quality — a useful baseline when comparing mattresses in India.
