Bed and mattress size chart for India

Indian bed sizes are not fully standardised. Two manufacturers can both sell a "queen" and mean different lengths, which is why ordering by name alone is how people end up with a mattress that leaves a gap at the foot of the bed. Order by measurement instead. This chart covers every size in common use, in all three units.

Full bed size chart in inches, feet and centimetres

Width is always quoted first. A 60 × 78 mattress is 60 inches wide and 78 inches long.

King size mattress dimensions

King is the size most often misquoted, because three different widths are all sold as "king" in India. In feet, an Indian king is 6 × 6.5 ft; the dimensions in inches and feet for each variant are below.

• 72 × 78 inches (6 × 6.5 ft) — the most common Indian king, and what most retailers mean by the word.
• 75 × 78 inches (6.25 × 6.5 ft) — a slightly wider king, sometimes sold as wide king.
• 78 × 78 inches (6.5 × 6.5 ft) — super king, and genuinely square. Worth it only in a large room.

An Indian king is not the same as a US or UK king. A US king is 76 × 80 inches and a UK king is 60 × 78 inches — which is closer to an Indian queen. Never order from an international chart.

How to measure your bed frame

Measure the inside of the frame, not your old mattress. Mattresses spread with age and shrink slightly when they compress, so an old one is rarely its original size.

• Measure width and length at the inner edges of the frame, in inches.
• Measure in two places along each direction — frames are not always perfectly square.
• If the two readings differ, use the smaller one.
• If your frame falls between two standard sizes, take the smaller size. A mattress forced into a tight frame develops permanent ridges along the edges and wears out early.

Which size for which room?

Leave at least two feet of clear floor on any side you walk down. A bed that fills the room makes it hard to change sheets and awkward to move around at night.

• Single (36 in) — one adult, children's rooms, guest beds. Fits rooms from about 7 × 10 ft.
• Small double (48 in) — one adult who likes space, or a couple in a compact room. From about 9 × 10 ft.
• Queen (60 in) — the most popular couples' size in India. From about 10 × 12 ft.
• King (72–78 in) — couples who want real space, or who share the bed with children or pets. From about 12 × 14 ft.

If the next size up fits the room with walking space to spare, take it. Sleeping space is rarely regretted; a cramped bedroom is.

Bed size vs mattress size

They are not the same measurement. A bed frame's external dimensions include the frame itself, which can add two to four inches on each side. When a retailer quotes a bed size they usually mean the mattress that fits it, but not always — if you are buying a frame and mattress separately, confirm which one is being quoted.

What about thickness?

Thickness (height) is separate from size and does not affect whether the mattress fits. Indian foam mattresses are typically 4 to 8 inches. Thicker is not automatically better — it changes feel, not fit. Pick it by comfort and by whether your fitted sheets will still reach. A 4-inch mattress on a high frame can also make the bed awkward to get into.

Custom sizes

Older and built-in beds in Indian homes are frequently non-standard, especially in houses where the frame was made by a carpenter. If your frame does not match anything in the chart, a custom-cut mattress is usually the answer rather than squeezing in the nearest standard size.
