Memory foam vs spring mattress: which is better?
It's the most common question when buying a bed: foam or spring? Neither is universally "better" — they simply feel and behave differently. Here's how they compare on the things that actually matter.
The quick answer
Choose foam if you want pressure relief, body-contouring support and silence (great for couples and side sleepers). Choose a traditional spring (innerspring) mattress if you like a bouncier, cooler, more "on top of the bed" feel. Modern high-resilience (HR) foam closes much of the old gap on bounce and breathability.
How they compare
| Memory / HR foam | Spring (innerspring) | |
|---|---|---|
| Support | Contours to the body, even support | Springy, more uniform push-back |
| Pressure relief | Excellent — cradles shoulders/hips | Moderate |
| Motion transfer | Very low — you don't feel your partner move | Higher — springs transmit movement |
| Heat | Memory foam sleeps warmer; HR foam is more breathable | Cooler airflow through the coils |
| Durability | Quality HR foam holds shape for years | Coils can sag or squeak over time |
| Noise | Silent | Can develop creaks |
Which should you pick?
- Side sleepers & joint pain — foam, for the pressure relief.
- Couples & light sleepers — foam, for near-zero motion transfer.
- You run hot at night — a breathable HR-foam build, or a spring for maximum airflow.
- You like a firm, bouncy surface — spring, or a firm HR-foam mattress.
