Do you need a mattress topper?
A topper is a few inches of foam laid on top of your existing mattress. It is a genuinely good fix for one specific problem and a waste of money for another, and the two are easy to confuse.
A topper fixes comfort, not support
This is the whole decision in one line. Comfort is the feel of the first inch or two under your body — how soft or firm it seems when you lie down. Support is what stops your hips and shoulders sinking out of line, and it comes from the core of the mattress.
A topper sits on top, so it can change comfort completely. It cannot add support to a mattress that has lost it, because it is resting on the same collapsed core.
Signs a topper will work
- Your mattress is too firm and you wake with sore shoulders or hips.
- The mattress is only a few years old and still flat when you look across it.
- You have moved and inherited a bed that is fine structurally but not to your taste.
- You share a bed and want a slightly softer surface without replacing a mattress that suits your partner.
- You want to protect a newer mattress from wear.
Signs you need a new mattress instead
- A visible sag or body impression that is still there when nobody is lying on it.
- You roll towards the middle when sharing the bed.
- The mattress is past its warranty period and the feel changed gradually rather than suddenly.
- You wake with lower back pain specifically — that is usually a support problem, not a surface one.
If any of those apply, spend the money on a mattress rather than a topper. See best mattress for back pain if pain is the reason.
What a topper changes in practice
Expect it to make a firm bed noticeably softer, take pressure off the shoulder and hip for side sleepers, and add a little insulation. Do not expect it to fix a dip, stop motion transfer between two people, or make a very old mattress feel new.
If a topper is the answer
Thickness is the next decision, and it changes the result more than anything else — see 2-inch vs 4-inch toppers, or how to choose a mattress topper for firmness and sizing.
Our Cloud Topper 2" is the softer, thinner option and the Ortho Topper 4" the firmer, deeper one. Both are BIS-compliant HR foam from our Jodhpur factory, delivered free across India with 7-day returns.
